Winter has come to an end and we’re all ready for warmer weather. We are getting ready for the new season by cleaning our home, but is your roof included in that spring cleaning checklist? A long winter of cold and snow can have an impact on your roof, so it is important to check on it and make sure everything is prepared for the warmer months to come.
Take a Look at the Shingles
The first sign that your shingles need to be replaced is if they are faded, peeling or broken. You may be able to patch some spots, or just replace the shingle. Every material is different, so some may hold up in harsh weather conditions better than others. For example, slat or rubber shingles may crack because of the winter’s icy conditions.
Check the Trees
During the winter months, the trees surrounding your home go bare and can lose some of its branches. As the warmer months come, those trees will begin to grow again. You will want to take a look at the trees to make sure none of the new branches are growing in the direction of your roof. If any of the branches have grown over your roof you’ll want to trim them so they don’t break off on top of your roof causing damage.
Clean Your Gutters
As winter storms have rolled through, fragments of your roof could have runoff into the gutters. You will want to clean them out so future rainstorms will have proper drainage in your home. If you do find fragments in the gutters, try and trace them back to where they came from. This may expose a crack or broken shingle you may not have seen before.
Go to the Attic
Whether it’s the attic or another room that is supported by the roof, you will want to take a look around to make sure everything is working like it should. This space should be dry with no light shining through. You’ll want to check for any leaks that may have caused a mold or mildew build up. If any of these spots are found you will need a roof repair and cleaning immediately.
