  2. Reinforcing component
  3. Surfacing component which protects everything from the elements

Let us Define Built-Up Roofs

Built-up roofs are made up of layers of fabric (usually felt) and bitumen. This roofing system has proven its reliability over hundreds of years. Having been used since the mid 1800’s it is one of the oldest and most reliable roofing systems available.

There are two types of built-up roofs asphalt and cold tar. Each consists of a waterproofing component, reinforcing component, and a surfacing component that protects everything from the weather. The bitumen commonly used is asphalt, cold tar, or cold applied adhesive. The surfacing materials can include gravel, slag or mineral granules), glass-fiber or mineral surfaced cap sheets for Built Up Roof Thickness.

The built-up roof is installed by applying the bitumen, spreading the surfacing material, and coating everything to protect it. The more layers you have on your built up roof the less chance you will have for leaks.
