Copper is one of the oldest metals used in history and has played a role in architecture for thousands of years. Some of the world’s most distinguished modern architects used copper. Copper is also a material that gets more aesthetically elegant with age. Copper is one of the longest-lasting roofing materials and can last a lifetime when installed correctly.  Copper roofing is extremely adaptable and looks beautiful on anything from some of the worlds oldest cathedrals and castles to modern homes and offices. One of copper’s famous traits is its display from a bright metallic color to iridescent brown to near black and finally to a greenish verdigris patina. While copper’s initial cost is higher than some other architectural metals, it usually does not need to be replaced during the entire life of a building. Due to its durability, low maintenance, and ultimate salvage value, the additional cost for copper may be insignificant over the life of a roofing system. Tests conducted on 18th Century copper roofs in Europe showed that, in theory, they could last for one thousand years.
